Why a 4-needle chainstitch over a multi-needle lockstitch

Speed. Chainstitch is faster than lockstitch at the same SPM because the under-thread loop doesn't require a hook synchronization to the same precision.
Elasticity. The looped construction stretches with the fabric. Critical on performance apparel and on denim that's going to wash and shrink.
Four needles in parallel, identical pattern. Waistband operators don't make four passes. They make one. Ten-fold cycle improvement on a typical waistband application.
